Denmark Approves US Military Bases Amid Greenland Concerns

Denmark approves a bill proposal that allows American military bases on Danish soil – a message that comes at a time when the President of the USA has shown great interest in taking control of the kingdom’s territory Greenland.

Legislation expands a previous military agreement entered into in 2023 with the Biden administration where American soldiers had extensive access to Danish air bases.

The change comes after Donald Trump’s recurring statements about taking over the strategic and mineral-rich Arctic island – despite Denmark and the US being allies in the defense alliance Nato.

Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen has stated that the agreement can be terminated if the US attempts to annex all or parts of Greenland.

The law is yet to be signed by King Frederik X.

Greenland’s head of government Jens-Frederik Nielsen has previously called the US statements about the island disrespectful and that it “will never ever become a property that can be bought by anyone”.

Corrected: In a previous version of the text, there was an incorrect formulation about the geographical location of the military bases.
